About Us
Welcome
The New York Angels is one of the longest running active angel groups in New York City and has invested over $45 million in entrepreneurial ventures. The group is an independent consortium of over 75 individual accredited angel investors. The New York Angels typically invest $100,000-$1,000,000 in seed/early stage companies, and syndicate deals with angel group partners and VC’s up to $2 million. Because of the vast experience of the membership, the group is receptive to a wide variety of industry sectors. The strength of the group is its ability to pool its money to make large investments, to mentor entrepreneurs to help them achieve their goals, and to make introductions that can accelerate growth.
New York Angels is not a fund and does not invest as a group. Our members collaborate on due diligence but make individual investment decisions. Each member makes their own thorough review of all information, including speaking with representatives of the company.
New York Angels is a New York State Non Stock Corporation whose primary business offices are located in New York City, and is managed by a small professional staff supervised by a Board of Directors elected by the membership.
The New York Angels meet monthly, excluding August, to screen and evaluate prospective deals.
Local Involvement
The New York Angels have made a personal and professional commitment to the ongoing development of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in New York City. This includes mentoring exciting local startup companies and lecturing and speaking on educational panels across the metropolitan area. It also includes deep relationships with the NYU Stern School of Business, Columbia Business School, Baruch College, Pace University, and the InSITE student counseling accelerator program. At these schools, New York Angel members participate in the annual business plan competition and also offer a “Future Angels” program for select business school students. Future Angels are carefully selected business school students who act as interns for the New York Angels. They get an opportunity to network with the Angels, attend meetings, and participate in due diligence. Additionally, the Angels work with the growing number of incubators in NYC.
History
The New York New Media Association (NYNMA) was a not-for-profit industry association founded in 1994 to support and promote the new media industry in the New York metro area. At its height NYNMA's membership soared to nearly 8,000 individuals representing 2,500 companies with members representing the entire business spectrum.
In 1997 the organization facilitated the creation of an Angel Investor Program to match promising entrepreneurs with experienced Angel Investors. By the time the Internet boom peaked, the NYNMA Angel Investors Program had provided more than $10 million in seed funding for over 30 new media companies, including content, hardware, software and ASP models.
In January, 2004, the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade association for the software and digital content industry, took over the bulk of NYNMA's operating programs, and the members of the NYNMA Angel Investors Program reformed the angel group as an independent investment organization with an expanded staff and more focused purview. In January of 2004, the 30 members of the former angel program, joined by a considerable number of fellow investors and with the blessing of SIIA, established the New York Angels, and re-dedicated themselves to vigorously investing in early-stage technology and new media companies in the New York City area and accelerating them to market leadership.
Members
New York Angels is an investment group of over 75 members. Our members are entrepreneurs, CEO's, venture capitalists and business leaders who have funded and built world-class companies. We mentor and coach the entrepreneur in whom we invest, serve on their boards, provide contacts and assist with team building, strategic planning and fundraising.
Our members collaborate on due diligence but make individual investment decisions and understand that investments in early-stage, privately-held ventures are risky and can be highly illiquid. Each member must make their own thorough review of all information, including speaking with representatives of the company. It is the member’s responsibility to make their own investment determination based on their independent evaluation.
