John McCarthy

John is a seasoned institutional investor with over twenty years of experience building and leading investment teams across a broad range of strategies. He began his career focusing on media, communications and consumer sectors, later serving as Head of Fundamental Equities at a large hedge fund. In this role, he oversaw teams investing across North America and Europe in sectors including TMT, consumer, financials, healthcare, and industrials, and was a member of the firm’s Executive, Investment, and Risk committees.
Leveraging this experience, John now focuses on empowering early-stage companies as an investor and advisor. He concentrates on refining go-to-market strategies, establishing strong financial controls and governance. John seeks founders with the vision to challenge norms, the intellectual honesty about their strengths and gaps, and the ability to build strong teams around differentiated offerings.
Originally from Toronto, Canada, John lives in New York City with his family. He holds a B.A. in Business and Economics from Skidmore College, and has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
