While we invest individually, we negotiate as a group, leveraging the experience of our membership. Due to the large size of many NYA investments, New York Angels has  led the round for 35+ early-stage deals.

New York Angels is a membership-based angel investment group of accredited investors who are professionals, entrepreneurs, operators, and industry experts.

NYA is a member-led group of active angel investors. We seek prospective members who will add to our collaborative process and become involved in identifying and evaluating investments, funding, and supporting our portfolio companies. Our network of members come from diverse backgrounds with skills and expertise in technology, marketing, media, finance, law, and other professional activities. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. The membership committee takes a holistic approach to application review.

NYA MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA

Membership in New York Angels is selective. We strive to find members who will be additive to the group. Membership prospects are each unique with no one matching all criteria and we do not consider only one factor.

Accreditation

Members must be accredited investors (according to SEC rules). NYA members typically have significant assets to invest with the objective of building a portfolio of angel investments.

Experience

NYA members come from varied backgrounds and benefit from our collective experience. We seek members with a proven track record of managing and building successful companies as entrepreneurs, operating executives or advisors who bring to NYA expertise in operations, marketing, technology, and other disciplines.

Connections

NYA portfolio investments benefit from the broad networks of our members. Members have connections with potential customers, industries, and sources of capital that can be leveraged to benefit NYA portfolio companies.

Dedication

At NYA, we view angel investing as a “team sport”. Working together in a collaborative process enhances the likelihood of success for all members. Members get involved and dedicate time to attending screening sessions, taking an active role in due diligence and identifying investment opportunities.

Diversity

We seek diversity in our membership and portfolio company founders. This includes gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic background. We welcome interest from all suitably qualified candidates.

Active Participation

NYA is a top 5 angel group in the U.S and our members have collectively invested over $167m. NYA expects its members to actively invest and participate in at least one NYA portfolio investment per year. This level of active investment gives NYA significant capital to put to work and the power to negotiate deal terms.

  • Prospective members should first complete the Indication of Interest form. Individuals who may be a good fit will be invited to attend one Screening and one Investment Forum to see how the group operates and meet current members. Following attendance at the two meetings and additional discussion as required, select individuals will be invited to submit an application for membership.

  • New York Angels was founded in 2004, and has invested over $170m in over 330 companies during that span, supporting innovative entrepreneurs. NYA has over 125 angel members with deep experience in entrepreneurship, finance, or industry vertical.

  • NYA members are expected to invest $50,000 per year.

  • While our membership has a concentration in New York and the Northeast, we have members from across the US as well as abroad. Expectations are for member to participate in the two half-day pitch sessions per month. Further engagement would be on an individual basis, based on the number of deals the angel is interested in delving further.

  • Our members most frequently invest in Seed/Series A startups. We are industry agnostic but some of our most common industry verticals include FinTech, Healthcare/Medical Devices, Real Estate, Gaming/Entertainment, Food and Beverage, and Advanced Materials.

  • NYA seeks members who can provide founders with capital, counsel, and connections. New members ideally add value to the group with expertise in a particular field and relevant business connections. In addition, members will need to be able to devote time during regular business hours to the group, particularly our Monday morning Screenings and Investment Forums.

  • New members are paired with an experienced member mentor to help them navigate the organization and its operations. In addition, NYA regularly hosts Member Engagement events including educational sessions.
